Finasteride Tablet: A Solution for Male Pattern Baldness

What is Finasteride Tablet?

Finasteride tablet is a medicine that helps men with certain types of hair loss, also known as alopecia. Finasteride tablet works by blocking the action of a hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink and stop producing hair. Finasteride tablet can slow down or even reverse hair loss in some men, but it does not restore hair that has already been lost. Finasteride tablet is not for use in women or children.

What You Need to Know Before Taking Finasteride Tablet

Before you start taking finasteride tablet, you should inform your health care professional if you have any of the following conditions:

  • You are a woman or a child. Finasteride tablet is only for men with hair loss.
  • You have kidney disease or infection. Finasteride tablet may affect your kidney function and require dose adjustment or monitoring.
  • You have liver disease. Finasteride tablet may increase your liver enzymes and require dose adjustment or monitoring.
  • You have prostate cancer or a history of prostate cancer. Finasteride tablet may lower your PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels, which are used to screen for prostate cancer. Finasteride tablet is not a treatment for prostate cancer and may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer in some men.
  • You have an allergy or sensitivity to finasteride or any other ingredient in the tablet. Finasteride tablet may cause a serious allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

You should also tell your health care professional about all the other medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking or planning to take, especially:

  • Some blood pressure medications, such as diuretics, beta-blockers, or calcium channel blockers. Finasteride tablet may interact with these medicines and affect your blood pressure or fluid balance.
  • Male hormones, such as testosterone or androgens. Finasteride tablet may reduce the effects of these hormones and cause unwanted side effects, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or gynecomastia.
  • Saw palmetto, a herbal product that is used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate health. Finasteride tablet may have a similar effect as saw palmetto and increase the risk of bleeding or surgery complications.
  • Soy isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen that is found in soy products or supplements. Finasteride tablet may interfere with the metabolism of soy isoflavones and affect your hormone levels or thyroid function.

Additionally, you should inform your health care professional if you consume alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, or illegal drugs regularly, as these substances may alter the way finasteride tablet works or cause adverse effects.

How to Take Finasteride Tablet

You should take finasteride tablet exactly as prescribed by your health care professional. The usual dose is one tablet (1 mg) per day, with or without food. You should swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet.

You should take finasteride tablet at the same time every day to maintain a steady level of the medicine in your body. Do not take more or less than the recommended dose, or stop taking the medicine without consulting your health care professional.

If you are a child or a woman, you should not handle or touch finasteride tablets, especially if they are broken or crushed. The active ingredient in finasteride tablet can be absorbed through the skin and cause harm to the unborn baby or the child's development. If you come in contact with finasteride tablets, wash the area with soap and water immediately and seek medical attention if needed.

If you think you have taken too much finasteride tablet, or if someone else has accidentally taken your medicine, you should contact a poison control center or an emergency room right away. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, or confusion.

Finasteride tablet is a long-term treatment for hair loss. You may need to take it for 6 to 12 months or longer to see the full benefits. If you stop taking finasteride tablet, you may lose the hair that you have gained within 12 months. Therefore, you should continue taking finasteride tablet as long as your health care professional advises you to do so.

What to Do If You Miss a Dose

If you forget to take a dose of finasteride tablet, you should take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, you should skip the missed dose and take the next one as usual. Do not take two doses at once or extra doses to make up for the missed one, as this may increase the risk of side effects.

What to Expect While Taking Finasteride Tablet

While taking finasteride tablet, you should monitor your symptoms and check your progress with your health care professional regularly. You should also be aware of the following:

  • Blood donation. You should not donate blood while taking finasteride tablet or for at least 6 months after you stop taking it. This is to prevent the possibility of giving finasteride tablet to a pregnant woman through a blood transfusion, which could harm her unborn baby.
  • Prostate cancer screening. You should have a baseline PSA test before starting finasteride tablet and follow-up PSA tests as recommended by your health care professional. Finasteride tablet can lower your PSA levels by about 50%, which may affect the detection of prostate cancer. If your PSA levels increase or are higher than expected, you may need further evaluation or biopsy to rule out prostate cancer.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Finasteride tablet is not for use in women and can cause birth defects or miscarriage if a pregnant woman is exposed to it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle or touch finasteride tablets, especially if they are broken or crushed. If a pregnant woman is exposed to finasteride tablet, she should contact her health care professional immediately. Finasteride tablet is not known to pass into breast milk, but women who are breastfeeding should not take or handle finasteride tablet.

Possible Side Effects of Finasteride Tablet

Finasteride tablet is generally well tolerated, but like any medicine, it may cause some side effects in some people. Most of the side effects are mild and temporary, and they usually go away after you stop taking the medicine. However, some side effects may be serious and require medical attention. You should report any side effects to your health care professional as soon as possible, especially if they are severe, persistent, or bothersome. Some of the possible side effects of finasteride tablet are:

  • Sexual side effects. Finasteride tablet may affect your sexual function or desire, such as reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, or decreased semen volume. These side effects may occur in up to 5% of men who take finasteride tablet, and they may persist or worsen after you stop taking the medicine. If you experience any sexual side effects, you should talk to your health care professional about your options and the risks and benefits of continuing or discontinuing the treatment.
  • Breast changes. Finasteride tablet may cause changes in your breast tissue, such as enlargement, tenderness, pain, lumps, or nipple discharge. These side effects may occur in less than 1% of men who take finasteride tablet, and they may indicate a serious condition, such as breast cancer. If you notice any breast changes, you should contact your health care professional immediately and have a breast examination.
  • Skin rash. Finasteride tablet may cause a skin rash or itching in some people, which may be a sign of an allergic reaction. If you develop a rash or itching, you should stop taking finasteride tablet and seek medical attention right away.
  • Mood changes. Finasteride tablet may affect your mood or mental health, such as causing depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts. These side effects are rare, but they may be serious and require immediate medical attention. If you experience any mood changes, you should contact your health care professional or a mental health professional as soon as possible.

This is not a complete list of side effects. You may experience other side effects that are not listed here. If you have any questions or concerns about the side effects of finasteride tablet, you should consult your health care professional.

How to Store and Dispose of Finasteride Tablet

You should store finasteride tablet in a closed container, away from light, heat, moisture, and children. The ideal storage temperature is between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Do not use finasteride tablet after the expiration date printed on the label or the package.
