It is used to treat chest pain (angina) and heart attacks. Nitrostat comes in the form of a tablet that you place under your tongue. When it dissolves, the nitroglycerin is absorbed into your bloodstream through your mouth tissues. Nitrostat starts working within 1-3 minutes and its effects last for up to 20 minutes.
If you are experiencing chest pain, take one tablet of Nitrostat as soon as possible. If the pain does not go away after taking one tablet, call 911 or another emergency service immediately. Do not take more than three tablets of Nitrostat in any 24-hour period unless directed by a doctor.
Nitroglycerin can also be used to prevent chest pain before certain activities such as exercise or sex. To prevent chest pain, dissolve one tablet of Nitrostat under your tongue at least 5 minutes before activity begins
