Lariam is an antimalarial agent that acts as a blood herbicide. "Mefloquine is active against the erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium species. However, the drug has no effect on the exoerythrocytic (hepatic) stage of the parasite. Lariam is effective against chloroquine-resistant malaria parasites. Lariam is a chiral molecule. It is reported that although the (+) enantiomer primarily mediates antimalarial activity, the (-) enantiomer contributes to psychotropic effects by specifically binding to adenosine receptors in the central nervous system.

Before and during a business trip to Guinea, I took a course of this drug. I can’t say how effective it is, but as a result I didn’t fall ill with malaria. My colleagues, who have been living in Guinea for several months, say that they do not take this drug permanently, because it significantly affects the liver. I think that if you are going to travel to a country where there is a chance to catch malaria, it’s worth taking the pills. The disease is serious.
