Immunity is the body’s natural ability to fight infection and disease. It can be either innate or adaptive. Innate immunity is the first line of defense and includes barriers such as skin and mucous membranes, as well as chemical defenses such as tears and saliva. Adaptive immunity develops after exposure to an antigen, either through natural infection or vaccination. It produces antibodies that recognize and bind specifically to the antigen, neutralizing it so that it can’t cause harm.
There are two types of adaptive immunity: cell-mediated and humoral. Cell-mediated immune responses involve T cells, which recognize antigens on infected cells and kill them directly. Humoral immune responses involve B cells, which produce antibodies that circulate in the blood stream and attack pathogens outside of cells.
The human body has both innate and adaptive immune systems working together to protect us from disease-causing organisms like bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi. Immunization with a vaccine helps develop our adaptive immune system by exposing us to dead or weakened forms of these organisms so our bodies can learn how to defend against them if we are ever exposed in the future
