Efavirenz is available as a tablet and can be taken once daily with or without food. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, and nausea. Rare but serious side effects can include liver damage and mental health problems such as suicidal thoughts or hallucinations.

People taking efavirenz should have regular blood tests to monitor their liver function and should avoid drinking alcohol. Pregnant women should not take efavirenz because it can cause birth defects.
