- Brand(s): Duprost Veltride Dutanol
- Manufacturer: Cipla Limited / Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. / Knoll Healthcaare Pvt. Ltd.
- Disease(s): Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
- Known as: Avodart
It belongs to a group of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Avodart helps shrink the prostate by blocking the action of an enzyme that causes it to grow. This may improve symptoms such as difficulty urinating and getting up at night to go to the bathroom.
Avodart is available as a capsule and can be taken once daily with or without food. Common side effects include decreased libido, ejaculatory dysfunction, and problems with erection. Rare but serious side effects include breast enlargement (gynecomastia) and male infertility.
If you are taking Avodart for BPH, your doctor will likely monitor your prostate size regularly using a test called a digital rectal examination (DRE). You should also notify your doctor if you experience any changes in urinary function or sexual function while taking this medication
Avodart for transgender
Avodart has also been found to be effective in treating transgender individuals who experience hair loss. In a study involving over 100 transgender participants, those who took avodart experienced significant hair regrowth after 6 months compared to those who did not take the drug. While more research is needed on the long-term effects of avodart for transgender individuals, this preliminary data suggests that it may be an effective treatment for hair loss in this population.
