Aciphex is a medication used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. Aciphex is also used to treat symptoms of heartburn and sour or bitter taste in the mouth. It belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs work by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
Aciphex may be prescribed for adults and children 12 years or older. It is taken once daily, 30 minutes before breakfast, with water. Aciphex can cause side effects such as headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and dizziness. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
