The global outbreak of Covid-19 (coronavirus) has caused widespread panic and raised many questions about the virus’ potential to cause a pandemic. What is Covid-19? How does it spread? What are the symptoms? And what can be done to prevent or treat it?
Covid-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified in 2019. It is similar to SARS-CoV, the virus that caused the 2002-2004 SARS pandemic. Like other coronaviruses, Covid-19 spreads through respiratory droplets, such as saliva and mucus. It can also be spread through contact with contaminated surfaces. The virus causes severe respiratory illness and has a high mortality rate.
There is no specific treatment for Covid-19 and there is no vaccine available yet.
The best way to prevent infection with Covid-19 is by practising good hygiene habits: washing your hands often with soap and water, avoiding close contact with people who are sick, and cleaning surfaces regularly with disinfectant wipes. If you develop symptoms of respiratory illness (fever, cough, shortness of breath), seek medical attention right away.
