Description of Ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It is available as an oral tablet, an intravenous injection, and a topical ophthalmic solution. Ciprofloxacin inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA, thereby preventing the bacteria from replicating and growing.

Ciprofloxacin is most commonly prescribed for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory tract infections (RTIs), and skin infections. However, it can also be used to treat more serious illnesses such as septicemia, pneumonia, and meningitis.

How does Ciprofloxacin work?

It works by inhibiting DNA gyrase, which is necessary for bacteria to replicate. This results in cell death and the clearance of the infection.

The recommended dosage for adults with most types of infections is 500 mg twice daily. For more serious infections, the dose may be increased up to 1,000 mg twice daily. Ciprofloxacin should be taken with plenty of fluids, preferably 2 hours before or after meals.

It is important not to exceed the recommended dosage unless directed by your doctor, as taking more than prescribed can increase the risk of side effects. If you are unsure about how much ciprofloxacin you should take, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice
